Dental Radiographs

November 1, 2017
PARSIPPANY, N.J. — November 1, 2017 — The ALARA Principle, As Low As Reasonably Achievable, is practiced by the dental profession to limit exposure to radiation when radiographs are taken.

Combined with limiting dental radiographs to only when a clinician deems them clinically necessary based on a patients unique circumstances, rather than according to the patient’s insurance benefits, this assures patients that the dental profession is sensitive to concerns about X-ray exposure and has responded.

For that reason, Delta Dental of New Jersey and Delta Dental of Connecticut are updating their benefits for radiographs for most new (and some existing) groups. (See the article below for details.)

We recognize that patients sometimes require additional radiographs. If a claim is not paid due to benefit frequency, it may be appealed with documentation detailing why the clinician determined them to be necessary.

The goal is to provide benefits for dental bitewing, panoramic films, and full mouth radiographs when they are clinically necessary, and we want to make sure all claims for these procedures are appropriately considered.

Please make sure that you confirm the limitations for the procedures mentioned here every time you confirm the benefits for a Delta Dental member.
